--About Us

I would like to introduce you to the oldest newspaper in Rankin County and one of the oldest  newspapers of continued publication in Mississippi.  The Rankin County News is 161 years old and continues to be a viable part of the community.

To serve the community more effectively and match media competition, we produce the Weekly Leader which was started some 30 years ago to reach the mass areas of the county.  We have had a growth in population in our county, averaging 7 people a day.  They are moving into the county due to our school systems and low crime rate.  This newspaper is free, but delivered by adult carriers each Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.  In order to cut production costs, we use the same “B” section for both newspapers.  Each week, we deliver over 15,000 Weekly Leader newspapers.

The Weekly Leader goes to over 6,400 homes of the Reservoir area which includes: Castlewoods, Millcreek, and Laurelwoods (Fannin Road subdivisions) subdivisions. It reaches over 6,000 homes in Pearl, MS, and over 2,700 homes in the Crossgates community of Brandon, MS.

The Rankin County News and the Weekly Leader are proud to say we serve the county in many ways.  We don’t just reach over 23,000 homes and businesses in the county, we reach readers of all ages and surpass the daily newspaper of an adjoining county.  In reading our newspapers, you’ll see many of the same advertisers who would not continue to advertise in our newspapers if they did not receive results.  If I can answer any questions for you, please call me - Marcus Bowers, Publisher, at (601) 825-8333.
